Quick and easy step by step guide on how to make an eye pillow

How to make an eye pillow?

Perfect for yoga classes, meditation and relaxation when you are at home or on the go.

… and a cute little gift for a yoga-loving friends.

If you’ve used eye pillows before  – I don’t have to advertise them any further… If you haven’t… well, you have to try!

You will need:

  • Some fabric for the eye pillow and it’s washable cover (Cotton fabric will be best. Most hobby shops sell small fabric off-cuts if you don’t have any at home. Searching charity shops for some materials can also be a good idea)
  • Half a cup of buckwheat & half a cup of flaxseeds for filling
  • Threads and needle (stitching it by hand is fast and easy and quite relaxing)

Method:

  1. Cut a piece of fabric 20 x 23 cm.
  2. Fold it in half along the longer edge, outside in. This should give you a rectangular 10 x 23 cm.
  3. Stitch around the edges leaving one shorter edge free. The stitching should be tight and dense so none of the seeds could escape from the bag. I just stitched twice around the free edges.

4. Mix buckwheat and flaxseeds. For optional fragranced eye pillow you can mix in some dried lavender, mint, camomile or other herbs. You can also add a few drops of an essential oil onto the pillow itself when it’s finished.

5. Pull your eye pillow right side out – use chopsticks to help you push the corners out.

6. Pour the seeds into the pillow case filling it up in ¾.

7. Fold in the edges of the fabric on the open end of the case and stitch in neatly.

8. Your eye pillow is done. Now you can make the eye pillowcase which will be washable. Make the case the same way as the eye pillow but cut the fabric 21 x 24 cm for a snug fit.

9. Leave the shorter edge free of stitching so it’s open.

Once you pull the pillowcase right side out and push the corners out with the chopsticks, fold in the free ends of fabric and stitch around so it has a nice finish but the shorter edge of the eye pillowcase stays open. The snug fit will keep it in place.

You can personalise your pillow case with some embellishment or embroidery. I’ve embroidered here my yoga buddy’s name (lucky for me it’s only 3 letters!) Just draw  / write on the fabric and follow the shape of your design with a contrasting thread.

Just remember to do any embellishment or embroidery on the fabric before you start stitching the pillowcase.

For an easy and cute ribbon decoration use a piece of ribbon, folding it into a desired shape and securing it with stitching.

The eye pillow is  now finished.  Time to relax and enjoy…

  1. This looks lovely. I like your choice of fabrics and colours. The weather is not spoiling us this weekend so I’m catching up on some tv and I’m attempting to make one 🙂

    1. Thank you Danni. That’s a great idea for the sunglasses case – you can definately do it by following the instruction of making the ‘pillowcase’ part
